The Local wood-artisan named Darryl Severn

There are handmade things.. and then there are one-of-a-kind handcrafted wooden artworks by Darryl Severn. Some of these take up to four years to complete from their raw timber stage. Such as some of Darryl's best works like "Triple Swirl".

At first glimpse it may look like one of those tree cross-section handmade coffee tables. However in a couple of seconds you'll soon realise, this tree had 3 trunks. Hence it's name Triple Swirl. From whichever angel you look at it, you'll see different features glowing out from the wood. Yes you don't see this every day. Heck you may only see it once in a lifetime. But this is where Darryl beings.

It all starts with finding a special piece of wood, which Darryl usually finds at auctions, markets as well as other sources. Some are over 150 years old, dating back to the time of the first fleets, convict settlements and the gold rushes. They are often sort after protected species that are illegal to log, and can only be sourced as naturally fallen trees. Then on top of this all, he looks for elegant patterns in the woods - the breath marks of God himself.

So once Darryl acquires one of these special slices of lumber, he puts it in his storage room, where it may sit for years, drying out a little bit at a time.

He has an instrument he uses to take the timber's humidity reading. He says "It'll tell you when it's ready". Meanwhile, he dreams what each piece of timber could become one day. He has it all as a working progress in his mind.

When it's ready, he gets to work, carving, sanding and cutting it into shape, before he applies up to six to ten thin layers of Carnaubu wax and varnish. This brings up the patterns and features in the wood. In all this process can take weeks.

Finally at the end of it, he's created a one of a kind, unique wooden handmade treasure. Such as "Golden Rings", or even a special clock, display bowl or fruit holder.

Now the good part, is that via DIY Home Decor you can purchase any one of these wonderful creations, not only supporting Local Greenslopes, Brisbane Artisan Darryl Severn, but also bringing something beautiful and unique into your home. No one can say, I've got the exact same coffee table, or napkin holder as you. Each one of his artworks is well price and absolutely unique and well crafted, with a lifetime of experience and skill.
